Hello Betty

The first Betty post ever from December 28, 2012.

The holidays are about to come to a close which can only mean one thing, I’ve officially overdosed on sappy girl movies.  I’ve watched the Holiday, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Love Actually and a plethora of other estrogen filled cry-fests.  I’ve drunk myself into oblivion and averaged about 5000 calories a day.

Holidays = good times.  And yes, I mean that as sarcastically as humanly possible.

Sometimes life and the holidays are fabulous, and other times, not so much.  But the hardest lesson of all is seeing the value in ourselves through the fabulous and not-so-fabulous times.

Sometimes, you gotta fake a Betty.

You know Betty.  There were a few.  There was Betty Grable and her million-dollar legs.  The original pin-up girl who kept many a soldier warm on cold WWII nights.

How about Betty Paige?  She was the first to say, I’m sexy and I know it, and screw the rest of you.

And then my personal favorite, Betty Davis.  Do you think she waited around for some lame ass

guy to show up? Hell to the no!  Frankly, I think she scared the bejeezus out of them.  I say good for her.

The trick is tapping into our inner Betty.  She really is there in every single one of us.  Women are strong. Stronger than we realize.  And like Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Women are like tea bags, you never know how strong they are until you put them into hot water.”

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be loved. But a real Betty loves herself first. She is more than enough on her own. She’s not waiting for Prince Charming to show up and let her out of the tower.  She let’s her own damn self out.

We aren’t a half waiting for someone to make us whole.  We aren’t incapable. We aren’t damaged goods. We aren’t too old. Too young. Too fat. Too skinny.  Too (whatever).  And we have to stop telling ourselves those things.

You are who you are, and it’s good enough.  Good enough right where you are.  And I happen to like you, just as you are.

So get ready Atomic Betty, this is your year.
